Old beauty with a new look
|
In August 2009 a major goal was achieved; the final stage of construction of the new-look company premises was completed.
Maschinenfabrik Max Kroenert has a tradition of over 100 years at its premises in Altona. Established in1903 in Lohmühlenstrasse, the firm moved to its current premises in Schützenstrasse as early as 1905 because of a lack of space. Since then a great deal has happened at this address. Over time buildings were adapted to ever-increasing space requirements, and office buildings, factory halls and warehouses were added. The company survived the First World War without damage to its buildings; it was not as fortunate during the Second, with direct hits by a number of bombs and the complete destruction of some buildings. Reconstruction only commenced in 1946, with diverse new buildings and extensions added during the 50s and 60s to meet the increasing demand for space.
While new construction and alteration solved the acute space problems, they did not follow any overall integrated design. In 2002 management first considered moving; the existing premises appeared to have become too small, and the structure and design of

new buildings and extensions did not suit the present-day challenges faced by the company. However, there was a desire to retain the historical company headquarters. This led to the birth of the so-called Master Plan; the existing premises would be completely rebuilt and restructured without considering the existing structure and design. The foundation for the future was laid.
In the following years the old buildings were demolished and replaced – all during normal business operations. Roofed floor space of 17,300 m² was created, including 2,800 m² of office space and 1,500 m² of working space, with a crane system capable of bearing loads of up to 20 t. Spatial economy was vastly improved. Thanks to an automated Kasto storage system for long materials, high-rack warehousing and fully-automated Megamat high-rack silos, storage density was increased substantially and all materials can be accessed directly.
The demolition of the oldest shed-roofed hall and the construction of a waste disposal point in its place will mark the end of construction on site. Now trucks and heavy goods vehicles can be loaded and unloaded directly in respective locations; the spatial positioning of all departments has been optimized and unnecessary routes and trips have been eliminated. The future was always kept in mind; the construction plan is flexible and extendable. Kroenert is now well-equipped for any new challenges it may face!
